Commitment Ceremonies
Commitment Ceremonies are often conducted for engaged couples who don't feel the need to legalise their union at this stage as well as members of queer communities and also a way of uniting those within polyamorous relationships where there are more than two people in the relationship. Some people might feel that legal marriage restricts their freedom but the Commitment Ceremony is the next best option so they can be together "for as long as love shall last" rather than "till death do us part". Some pagan couples even prefer the idea of an ancient, non-legal traditional handfasting commitment ceremony of a year and a day so that they can renew these vows each year or until they feel ready to make a bigger commitment to each other in a legally binding ceremony if they so choose to in the future. I write sensitive and thoughtful ceremonies which communicate the depth and strength of the commitment you feel. I can help you find the words, passages and symbols that capture your desire to proclaim and formalise your connection. Unfortunately, Australian law does not allow the legal marriage of queer couples and other non-traditional relationships but apart from the legal marriage certificate, there is no reason why a commitment ceremony of any sort between people that love each other can't be as special and as meaningful as that of the legalised marriages of heterosexual couples. I will do my best to make this day as special as possible for you and I look forward to the day when Australia's laws concerning same sex marriages and even polyamorous unions are reformed.
